SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
159 PM AKDT TUE JUN 28 2016

AKZ121-292200-
WESTERN KENAI PENINSULA-
INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...KENAI...SOLDOTNA...HOMER...
COOPER LANDING
159 PM AKDT TUE JUN 28 2016

...HIGH WATER ON KENAI LAKE AND THE KENAI RIVER...

WATER LEVELS ON KENAI LAKE AND THE UPPER KENAI RIVER ARE BANKFULL
IN SOME LOCATIONS AND MAY CONTINUE TO SLOWLY RISE THROUGH THIS
COMING WEEK...ESPECIALLY OVER MIDDLE AND LOWER PORTIONS OF THE
RIVER. NO WIDESPREAD FLOODING IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME...HOWEVER
WATER WILL BE HIGH THROUGH THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

THE VERY HEAVY WINTER SNOWPACK IN THE KENAI MOUNTAINS CONTINUES TO
MELT AND SEND RUNOFF INTO THE HEADWATERS OF THE KENAI RIVER. THIS
SNOWMELT HAS BEEN ACCELERATED BY RECENT VERY WARM TEMPERATURES AND
SEVERAL ROUNDS OF RAINFALL OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. MORE RAIN
FALLING THIS WEEK WILL ADD TO THE WATER MOVING INTO AND THROUGH
THE RIVER. WATER LEVELS ON THE MIDDLE AND LOWER RIVER WILL LIKELY CONTINUE
TO SLOWLY DRIFT UPWARD THROUGH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.

AS OF 1 PM AKDT ON TUESDAY...THE RIVER GAGE AT COOPER LANDING
SHOWS A STAGE OF 12.83 FT...AND HAS LEVELED OFF IN THE LAST
SEVERAL HOURS. THERE IS SOME WATER ACROSS THE ACCESS ROAD TO
PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND...LOCATED AT THE SOUTH END OF KENAI LAKE.
WHEN/IF THE STAGE REACHES 13.0 FT THIS ROAD MAY BECOME
IMPASSABLE. RECENT REPORTS FROM THE KENAI KEYS AREA INDICATE THE
RIVER IS BANKFULL IN THIS AREA WITH PONDING OF WATER IN LOW LYING
AREAS ADJACENT TO THE RIVER. THE NWS WILL CONTINUE TO CLOSELY
MONITOR THIS SITUATION AND WILL UPDATE THIS STATEMENT AS
NECESSARY.

THOSE WITH INTERESTS ON OR ALONG THE KENAI RIVER AND NEAR THE
PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND SHOULD MONITOR THIS SITUATION CLOSELY AND
PREPARE NOW FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTINUED RISING WATER LEVELS.
