...POWERFUL WINDS BLOW THROUGH PORTIONS OF SOUTHCENTRAL...

HERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE STRONGEST WIND GUSTS AS OF 5 PM. THIS
DATA IS PRELIMINARY. 

THERE WERE REPORTS OF LOCALIZED DAMAGE AROUND VALDEZ AND THE
MATANUSKA VALLEY...THE LOCATIONS OF THE STRONGEST OBSERVED WINDS.

IN VALDEZ...A LARGE SECTION OF FLAT ROOF WAS LIFTED AWAY FROM A
DOWNTOWN VALDEZ HARDWARE STORE FRIDAY MORNING. TWO LARGE CHUNKS
OF THE ROOF SAILED MORE THAN TWO BLOCKS AWAY BEFORE CRASHING TO
THE GROUND. A COUPLE OF BOATS WERE DAMAGED IN THE HARBOR DRYDOCK
AREA WITH ROOFS FROM HOUSE TRAILERS AND OTHER BUILDINGS BROKEN
LOOSE.

IN THE MATANUSKA VALLEY...TREES WERE DAMAGED AND A LARGE HIGHWAY 
SIGN ON THE PARKS HIGHWAY NEAR TRUNK ROAD WAS BLOWN DOWN. HIGHEST
GUSTS WERE REPORTED AT THE PALMER AIRPORT WITH 75 MPH AND 68 MPH
NEAR THE GLENN-PARKS HIGHWAY INTERCHANGE.
