Satellite Ice Imagery

This page is used to post satellite images of sea ice. Resolution of images may range from 250 meters to 4 kilometers. Sources for the imagery include NASA MODIS, NOAA POES AVHRR, and the FENGYUN satellite from China. Data for the AVHRR and FENGYUN satellite links is processed by NWS Alaska Region. Images may be a raw view or geolocated using ESRI ArcGIS software by the ice forecasters. Images will be added to this page on Tuesdays and Thursdays, cloud cover permitting. Additional images may be added on other days as time permits.

Occasionally, these images are also posted on the NWS Alaska Facebook web page. Questions may be ask via the Facebook page or sent to the NWS Alaska Sea Ice Program.
