WESTERN KENAI PENINSULA-

COOPER LANDING
1113 AM AKDT SAT JUN 25 2016

...HIGH WATER ON THE KENAI RIVER...

WATER LEVELS ON THE KENAI RIVER ARE BANKFULL IN SOME LOCATIONS AND WILL
CONTINUE TO SLOWLY RISE THROUGH THE WEEKEND. NO WIDESPREAD FLOODING
IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.

THE VERY HEAVY WINTER SNOWPACK IN THE KENAI MOUNTAINS CONTINUES TO
MELT AND SEND RUNOFF INTO THE HEADWATERS OF THE KENAI RIVER. THIS
SNOWMELT HAS BEEN ACCELERATED BY RECENT VERY WARM TEMPERATURES AND
SEVERAL ROUNDS OF RAINFALL OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS. ADDITIONAL
RAINFALL EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND WILL ADD TO THE WATER MOVING INTO
AND THROUGH THE RIVER. RIVER LEVELS WILL CONTINUE TO SLOWLY DRIFT
UPWARD THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

THE RIVER GAGE AT COOPER LANDING CURRENTLY SHOWS A STAGE OF 12.47
FT. AT 12.5 FT THE FIRST LOCATION TO BE IMPACTED BY WATER WILL BE
PARTS OF THE ACCESS ROAD TO THE PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND AT THE SOUTH
END OF KENAI LAKE. IF THE STAGE REACHES 13.0 FT THIS ROAD MAY
BECOME IMPASSABLE. RECENT REPORTS FROM THE KENAI KEYS AREA INDICATE THE
RIVER IS BANKFULL IN THIS AREA WITH PONDING OF WATER IN ISOLATED
LOW LYING AREAS ADJACENT TO THE RIVER. THERE ARE NO FLOOD IMPACTS REPORTED
AT THIS TIME ALONG THE KENAI RIVER. THE NWS WILL CLOSELY MONITOR THIS
SITUATION AND WILL UPDATE THIS STATEMENT AS NECESSARY.

THOSE WITH INTERESTS ON OR ALONG THE KENAI RIVER AND NEAR THE
PRIMROSE CAMPGROUND SHOULD MONITOR THIS SITUATION CLOSELY AND PREPARE
NOW FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTINUED RISING WATER LEVELS.
